Temperature monitoring is performed by means of two types of sensors: NTC thermistor or PT100 resistance thermometer. The part that is sensitive to temperature variations is positioned inside a resin-coated stainless steel bulb.

These sensors are widely used for monitoring the temperature in building materials, rocks, soil, liquids and in free-air.

In some cases it is also necessary to monitor the relative humidity of air and temperature variations through the use of a combined humidity and temperature sensor.

Thermistors/resistance thermometers measure temperature by correlating the electrical resistance of a material with temperature. The difference between the two sensors lies in the material with which they are made: the thermistor is made of semiconducting material while the resistance thermometer consists of a metallic conductor (platinum, for example). The temperature measurement gauged by the resistance thermometer is more accurate than that of the thermistor.

NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) is a sensor created with semiconductors made from metal oxides (iron, cobalt and nickel). The resistance of the sensor in an NTC thermistor lessens as the temperature rises, according to a decreasing exponential curve.
PT100 (Platinum resistance thermometer) this is a sensor that gauges the resistance of a platinum sensing element. The principle according to which resistance thermometers operate is based on the variation of the resistive value of a metal as the temperature to which it is subjected changes. In its purest form, the Pt guarantees a linear resistance/temperature relation and is thus easily used in measuring systems. The most common type (100) has 100 OHm resistance at 0°C and 138.4 Ohm at 100°C.
